Minions 2 – The Rise of Gru Style Guides 2021
For the upcoming 2022 movie release of Minions 2 : The Rise of Gru I worked on several style guides during 2021. Originally the movie was due to release in the summer of 2020 but has been pushed back several times due to Covid19. Style guides are designed to give manufacturers and product partners worldwide an opportunity to use pre-approved art to create their product. The art in these guides gets used on thousands of products globally.
These guides are relatively new but they were still used substantially around the globe in 2021. You can see all four of the guides here.
Iconic Mayhem 0.2 – Based on the success of the first style guide I designed I was asked to provide a new version. This time I focused on a new color palette and contemporary typography.
Stay Trippy – This guide was born out of a piece of art I created during the development of the movie. It was originally designed as a movie development piece that was then built upon to create a guide. It marries vintage looking cosmic design with tripped out floral seventies minions.
Momo’s Minions – Working with the incredibly talented Momo Wang this design was created to support the halo partnership business. Momo is a very established animator and artist and it was a pleasure to work with her interpretation of the minions characters.
Iconic Mayhem 0.3 – By the end of the year Iconic Mayhem one and two were so well received and used by partners, I was asked to make a third. This one was focused on color and texture as well as the introduction of rendered 3D minions.
I was the creative director on these guides, creating graphics, mood-boards, patterns and icons. The art and production was supported by Lincoln Design Company, Tatiana Krasovski, Momo Wang Adam Highton. Character art support was provided by Sean Millard.

Illumination Entertainment and Universal Studios teamed up with global retailer H&M to create a North America Collection for kids. Nearly all of the art used for this collection came from a style guide I created earlier this year for Illumination. I created a core look in a style guide to support the release of the Minions: The Rise of Gru movie.
The art I created was really well utilized for this collection. I am really happy with the products because although it is core minions, it still has a fresh design aesthetic. I especially like the flock tee and the all over patterned sweater. You can see the entire collection on my portfolio page HERE. These products are available for purchase HERE at H&M. Many have already sold out, which I guess is good news.

Illumination Entertainment and Universal Studios teamed up with designer brand Castelbajac to celebrate the release of Secret Life of Pets 2. Castelbajac is world renowned for his painted style of art and bold color choices. I was asked to work with Castelbajac to create the pets characters in this recognizable style. I created several pieces of art that were then made into patterns, icons and graphics. This art was then applied to two collections. One was a line of golfing apparel for adults and the other was developed for pets. The two lines were launched with a golfing tournament in Korea.

After working with Illumination Entertainment on a previous project I was hired to tackle design for the Mellow Minions. I created vector Illustrations of the core Minions characters in a new line art style. The work was created for Illumination Entertainment Consumer Products & Universal Studios, Japan. The Japanese team took the artwork and applied it across a large range of products sold exclusively in the Universal Studios, Japan resort. I was amazed at how many products sprouted from just six character illustrations. I believe around 48 products have been created from this collection to date. I’d like to give credit to Sean Millard for character design support. You can see full details and products here: https://wottoart.com/portfolio/mellow-minions/

In late 2018 Illumination Entertainment commissioned me to create two large mural wall pieces. The pieces were designed as interactive coloring walls celebrating the Minions and Despicable Me franchise. I was tasked with creating art for the girls room section of the exhibit. The walls are focused on the themes, space and imagination. These huge spaces are filled with doodles and characters from the movies, including Agnes, Fluffy, Gru, Minions and many others.
The art is part of a traveling experience called “A Minion Perspective” that has begun in Shanghai, China and will continue exhibiting across Asia. The art was created digitally and spans across a 26′ wall of digital screens. Visitors can stop and color in key characters and elements, once finished they appear on the large screen to make up a community coloring wall. It was a huge undertaking but thoroughly enjoyable.
